World's largest circular solar project - ENGIE & SABIC

ENGIE and SABIC realised the world's largest circular solar installation in Genk - with lightweight solar panels from Solarge. The project shows how innovative materials and circular design contribute to making industrial energy supplies more sustainable.

The SABIC site in Genk required a large-scale solar installation that was not only sustainable and efficient, but also matched the project's circular ambitions and innovative image.

Circular innovation on an industrial scale

At the SABIC site in Genk, ENGIE Sun4Business installed 4,600 lightweight solar panels from Solarge as part of a pioneering circular solar project. The panels were developed in collaboration with SABIC and produced in the Netherlands. Thanks to their construction from fully separable material layers, the various components can be easily reused at the end of their lifespan. By using innovative polymers and a minimal amount of aluminium, the panels are significantly lighter than traditional solar panels and further reduce the carbon footprint.

Lightweight solar panels for a more sustainable industry

The solar plant produces around 2,000 MWh of renewable electricity annually, most of which is used directly by the SABIC plant. This reduces CO₂ emissions by around 800 tonnes annually. Thanks to the light weight of the Solarge panels - about 50% lighter than conventional solar panels - even roofs with limited carrying capacity can be used for solar power. The project underlines how circular production, innovative materials and local European manufacturing contribute together to the energy transition.
